Francesco Saverio Altamura

Biography and criticism

Francesco Saverio Altamura, born in Bari in 1971, is an Italian artist who works across various media, including painting, sculpture, photography, and video. His work explores themes related to the human body, identity, and historical memory, while also addressing social and cultural issues of contemporary life. His art is distinguished by the use of innovative materials and techniques, as well as an intense and original treatment of the human figure, often distorted or stylized, creating a dialogue between beauty and unease. Altamura studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bari, where he developed a solid academic foundation that allowed him to experiment with new artistic languages. His works, characterized by strong chromatic contrasts and a material presence, explore the boundary between the visible and the invisible, between reality and imagination, with particular attention to the transformation of the body and its representation. He has exhibited in numerous museums and galleries in Italy and abroad, including the MADRE Museum in Naples and the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Bologna, and has participated in the Venice Biennale. His ongoing artistic research continues to explore the tension between tradition and innovation, with an approach that challenges artistic conventions and invites the public to reflect on the challenges of the individual in contemporary society.
