Federico Ashton

Federico Ashton

Biography and criticism

Federico Ashton, born in Milan in 1840, was a painter whose education began at the Accademia di Brera, where he studied under Gaetano Fasanotti and Luigi Riccardi, focusing primarily on landscape painting from life. His passion for nature and romantic views further developed after spending time in Switzerland, where he studied under the landscape artist Alexandre Calame. There, he adopted a dramatic and scenic approach to painting, which would influence his later works. Ashton frequently depicted the nature of Ossola, the Alps, and Mount Rosa, which became his main sources of inspiration. Throughout his career, he exhibited regularly in cities such as Turin, Genoa, Florence, and Milan, achieving considerable success. In 1872, he moved to Rome, where he continued his artistic exploration between the Roman countryside and landscape. He also taught painting to aristocratic women while still exhibiting in Turin and Genoa. Later, he spent time in Norway, followed by a move to Domodossola, where the surrounding landscapes, especially the mountain and lake scenery, inspired his work. Eventually, he settled in Pallanza on Lake Maggiore, where he spent his final years, continuing to explore lake and mountain landscapes. His works are characterized by a remarkable attention to atmospheric and light variations, often infused with romantic accents that add an emotional depth to the natural world. His painting technique draws from the masters who preceded him but stands out for the emotional intensity that permeates his landscapes. His last exhibition took place in 1896, before his death in 1904 during an excursion in the Sempione mountains. Ashton’s work, spanning from the Alps to the valleys of Piedmont and Switzerland, is imbued with a romantic and naturalistic vision that left a lasting mark on the art world of his time. His ability to infuse his landscapes with emotional depth, combined with his meticulous attention to detail, contributed to his success as a landscape painter.
