Biography and criticism

Giuseppe Ariassi, born in Brescia on July 4, 1825, was an Italian painter known for his landscapes, religious subjects, altar pieces, sacred paintings, and portraits. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Brera, Milan, where he became a prominent disciple of Francesco Hayez, later teaching Francesco Filippini. Ariassi spent much of his career creating frescoes for churches across Lombardy, contributing significantly to the region’s artistic heritage. For over thirty years, he served as the president of the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo in Brescia, where he also directed the attached school of drawing. He was instrumental in organizing the *Esposizione bresciana* of 1878, held at the Crocera di San Luca, further solidifying his role as a key figure in Brescia’s cultural life. Ariassi passed away in Brescia on January 13, 1906.
