Horst Antes

Biography and criticism

Horst Antes (born Heppenheim, 1936) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, where he also taught from 1965 to 1971. Initially influenced by Expressionism, Antes occupies a unique position within the realm of “new figuration” with his works populated by primordial and archetypal figures, presented in a surreal atmosphere. His paintings are characterized by a distinctive blend of mythic and dreamlike qualities, where human forms appear both timeless and otherworldly. Many of his works are housed in major museums, including those in Cologne, Vienna, Ulm, and Hamburg. In addition to painting, Antes has also created numerous prints, showcasing his versatility as an artist.
