Richard Anuszkiewicz

Biography and criticism

Joseph Anuszkiewicz (born May 23, 1930, Erie, Pennsylvania – died May 19, 2020, Englewood, New Jersey) was an American painter and a pioneering figure in the development of Op Art, a movement focused on the exploration of visual perception and optical illusions. Anuszkiewicz studied at several institutions, including the Cleveland Institute of Art (1948–53), the Yale University School of Art and Architecture (1953–55), and Kent State University, where he earned a B.S. in Education in 1956. In 1967, he was named artist-in-residence at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, and later taught at the University of Wisconsin, Cornell University, and Kent State University, sharing his expertise in the field of visual arts. Anuszkiewicz’s work is known for its bold use of color and intricate geometric patterns. His paintings feature precise, tightly organized shapes and vibrant hues that create a sense of movement and optical tension. One of his notable works, *All Things Live in the Three* (1963), features three orange diamonds with green dots on a red background, interspersed with blue dots and red patterns inside the diamonds—an example of his characteristic exploration of color relationships and the visual effects they produce.
