Biography and criticism

Hocine Zaourar (born December 18, 1952), also known simply as Hocine, is an Algerian photojournalist renowned for his impactful and powerful images documenting conflict and human suffering. His photograph, Woman Grieves after Massacre in Bentalha, taken in 1997, won both the prestigious World Press Photo of the Year and the Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award for War Correspondents in 1998. Hocine’s journey into photography began in 1970. He became a professional photojournalist in 1989 when he joined Reuters, and by 1993, he was working for Agence France-Presse (AFP). In the early years of his career, Hocine covered various international crises, including conflicts in Somalia, Rwanda, and Zaire. However, over time, he focused his work exclusively on Algeria, where he would document some of the most harrowing moments of the country’s civil war.
