Biagio Battaglia

Biography and criticism

Biagio Battaglia was born in Comiso (RG), Italy, and has been living in Milan since 1961. He completed his studies at the Istituto Statale d’Arte of Comiso, specializing in sculpture. After a brief period working in artisanal sculpture workshops, he began a professional career in the field of building design, working as a technical draftsman for architectural firms—initially in his hometown, and later continuing in Milan. In Milan, he progressed through all stages of the profession, eventually founding his own practice, “TEAM PROGETTO – Architecture and Development”. Through this studio, he has provided technical consultancy in design and project management for leading companies in Italy and abroad. This work allowed him to explore a synthesis between art and the discipline of technical design, helping him reconcile a vision poised between utopia and the observation of the world around him. His passion for art, which began at a very young age, has never faded. Today, he is fully dedicated to painting, seeking to develop a personal artistic language while engaging with and experimenting in the expressive forms of contemporary art. To paraphrase Kant: one might say that among the pleasant, the beautiful, and the good, only the appreciation of the beautiful is a free and disinterested satisfaction—because it is uninfluenced by either sensual desire or rational necessity. Biagio Battaglia develops a pictorial exploration that emerges from the interplay between personal sensitivity and the observation of reality. In his work, beauty is not an abstract value but something shaped by daily life, filtered through a deeply attentive and internalized gaze. His painting remains grounded in the present, engaging with contemporary events and themes without conforming to predefined stylistic formulas. What emerges is an autonomous, coherent, and deeply expressive visual language, where each work asserts a distinct and individual vision. Beneath the surface of his subjects lies a clear intent: to defend and affirm a personal idea of style, where form is organized into a harmonious space that embraces both real and imaginative stimuli. His art stands out for its compositional balance, for the thoughtful organization of space and color. Nothing is merely decorative—every element is part of a meaningful structure aimed at conveying both emotion and thought. Battaglia turns painting into a form of testimony, where allegory and color become the hallmarks of a mature and reflective poetic expression.
