Angelo Achini

Biography and criticism

The artist studied at the Accademia di Brera under the guidance of Giuseppe Bertini, where he received several accolades, including two silver medals in 1868 for progress in his artistic development. His talent was further recognized in 1877 when he won the first prize at the Fumagalli National Painting Competition for his historical painting *Arrest of Fra Girolamo Savonarola*, which he presented at the Brera Exhibition the same year and later at the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris. In the following years, his style began to show the influence of the Scapigliatura movement, particularly after meeting painters Daniele Ranzoni and Tranquillo Cremona, to whom he dedicated two important portraits: *Funerary Mask of Tranquillo Cremona* and *Tranquillo Cremona on his Deathbed*, both painted directly from life. After completing his studies at the Accademia di Brera, the artist opened several studios in Milan, where he participated in numerous exhibitions across Italy and abroad. Notable Italian exhibitions included those in Turin (1878), Genoa (1879–1892), Milan (1872–1891), and Rome (1881–1883). Some of his key works shown included *Canalazzo in Venice*, *The Meeting of Clement VII and Charles V Concerning Florence*, *The Little Mother*, *The Gondolier*, and *Celestina*. His work, which ranged from historical painting to portraiture and genre scenes, was also exhibited internationally, including in Munich (1878), Mulhouse (1886), and Brussels (1897). This artist’s career, marked by stylistic evolution and an active exhibition schedule, cemented his reputation as an important figure in 19th-century Italian painting.
