Luigi Camellini

Luigi Camellini

Biography and criticism

A native of Guastalla but a resident of Novellare for many years, a connoisseur and aedo of the landscapes and countryside present in the lower Reggio Emilia, he reports in his canvases the happy and carefree days of his childhood immersed in the freedom of the fields, the rows, the banks of the streams, enchanted to listen to the fairy tales by his grandparents, which they have handed down to their grandchildren since time immemorial. The paintings of this author with a long experience always dedicated to the naïve are authentic accounts, which not only report the past, seen with nostalgia and poetry, but which cry out the present, perceived as a threat to an increasingly submissive and succumbing nature, to a savage and unconscious destruction, in the name of a progress that is not always such. Luigi Camellini, through his naive art, conveys a strong connection to the land, the rhythm of nature, and the rural traditions that, unfortunately, risk disappearing. His works tell stories of a childhood spent in the fields, among games, grandparents’ tales, and moments of simple, genuine life. Each painting is a reflection of a world that no longer exists, a world of calm and authentic contact with nature, expressed through images of haystacks, rows of vines, and barrels of balsamic vinegar. But beyond the beauty and serenity they convey, Camellini’s paintings also serve as a warning: alongside an idyllic landscape, unchanging over time, there is an unsettling change. His canvases suggest a landscape in decline, where waters are no longer clear and streams become symbols of pollution. Artificial lights replace the soft gleam of the stars, and even the rainbow loses its brilliance, suffocated by smog. In this way, the artist doesn’t merely recount the past but invites reflection on the present and the future, highlighting the importance of preserving a heritage that, although simple, is essential to the balance of our lives. This dual interpretation, blending the sweetness of memory with a subtle social critique, makes Camellini’s art unique in its genre. While maintaining a style that evokes nostalgia for past times, his painting also conveys a contemporary message, urging reflection on our responsibility toward the environment and future generations. His ability to tell a story with simple, harmonious language about a world that could be lost makes his work accessible even to those who are not passionate about the genre, demonstrating the universal power of his art.
