Carlotta Mantovani

Biography and criticism

Born in Ferrara in 1961, I graduated from the Istituto Magistrale in 1978 and from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1982. I started my career as a teacher of Artistic Education at the S. Vincenzo De Paoli secondary school in Ferrara, where I taught for four years and obtained my teaching qualification in 1985. From 1987 to 1991, I worked as a designer and illustrator in the field of cartography for a Milan-based agency and also collaborated as a freelancer with other illustrators. Between 1989 and 1993, I contributed to the creation of an illustrated Chemistry and Mathematics textbook for middle schools, published by Zanichelli, while working at the Taibi & Taibi graphic studio in Ferrara. My artistic career began with a collective exhibition in 1983, alongside two other young artists, at the Chiostro di S. Romano in Ferrara, now the site of the Cathedral Museum. After a long period of reflection and involvement in other professional activities, I returned to painting, rediscovering an artistic expression that I felt was truly mine, and I began to exhibit my works again. Since 2015, I have participated in numerous group exhibitions both in Italy and abroad. Notable exhibitions include the 2015 Rivellino Gallery in Ferrara and the Romart Biennale in Rome. In 2016, I exhibited in events like “Mentana in Florence” in Florence, “Love and Peace” in Turin, and “Orietur in tenebris lux tua” in Lucca. In 2017, I participated in exhibitions such as “Art Emotion” in Milan, “Art Experience” in Bologna, and “Art Rome” in Rome, among many others across Italy. In 2018, I continued exhibiting, including shows like “Venezia arte senza tempo” in Venice and “Amor che tutto move” in Bologna. In 2020, I received the “Nike di Samotracia” award during the “Linea, forma, colore” exhibition in Florence. In 2021, I participated in “Respiriamo Arte in libertà!” in Ferrara and “Contemporanea” in New York, where one of my works remained on display throughout 2022. More recently, in 2022, I exhibited in Bologna at the “Art Prize Pallavicini” and in Udine with the group exhibition “Delicate tenuità.” Carlotta Mantovani emerges as a distinctive presence in the vast world of contemporary art, characterized by her unique and finely crafted painting style. Her work navigates the historical transition from figurative representation to abstraction, while still maintaining a subtle suggestiveness even in moments of greatest departure from direct visual depiction. What sets her apart is her ability to blend a rich emotional use of color with the fantastical elements of abstract expressionism. At the core of her artistic vision is the color, which she elevates to the forefront of her compositions, creating a powerful emotional charge that intoxicates the viewer. However, this vibrant explosion of hues is far from a mere abstraction; it retains a deep connection to the natural world. Her work, in fact, carries an undercurrent of vitality, linked to memories of vegetation and a profound internal life force. This is why her abstract works can be appreciated as a transfiguration of the real world, where elements of nature are reimagined and transformed into something beyond the literal. In her landscapes, one senses the influence of a romantic sensibility, akin to the naturalistic abstraction of Turner. While her abstraction often seeks to detach from the representational, it never loses its intimate relationship with the natural environment. Whether depicting sea horizons or expansive skies, Mantovani’s work goes beyond the mere perception of the visible world, offering a deeper connection to the emotional essence of nature. Her colors, reminiscent of plant life, seem to pulse with a quiet vibrancy that suggests a retreat into the realm of pure imagination. What is striking is how she takes real-world elements and transforms them, yet preserves their intrinsic nature. In Mantovani’s hands, every element is reinterpreted, imbued with a chromatic energy that is both expansive and conversational. Ultimately, her bold and gestural brushstrokes serve as a conduit for a fresh emotion, where the initial inspiration always evolves into something far more profound—an emotional state that speaks to the spirituality of the human experience. Carlotta Mantovani’s work becomes a journey of transformation, where reality is continually reimagined through the lens of color and emotion.
