Biography and criticism

Natale Attanasio, a painter born in Catania in 1845 and passing away in Rome in 1923, began his artistic training at the Academy in Naples, where he studied under the guidance of the renowned artist Morelli. His education was supported by a grant from the Municipality of Catania. He made his debut at the Promotrice in Naples in 1876, showcasing his work Un pensiero dominante. Details of his life are scarce, but his artistic legacy is evident through the many frescoes he created for prestigious commissions. Among his notable works are frescoes in Palermo, such as those at the Teatro Massimo Bellini, the apse of the Church of Carmine, and at Palazzo Montevago. In Rome, he is also known for his fresco in the reading room of the Senate. Attanasio’s works often focused on historical subjects and genre scenes, which he depicted with a social and theatrical tone. His paintings emphasized the hardships and misfortunes of individuals, revealing a deep engagement with the human condition and social issues.
