Pablo Atchugarry

Biography and criticism

Pablo Atchugarry was born on August 23, 1954, in Montevideo, Uruguay. From a young age, he explored various materials, but it was in 1979 that he discovered marble, a material that captivated him with its elegance. In Carrara, he created his first sculpture, titled “La Lumière.” His connection with marble deepened in 1982 when he embarked on his first monumental marble project and settled permanently in Lecco, Italy, where he established his residence and studio. Throughout his career, Atchugarry has received numerous accolades. In 2002, he was awarded the “Michelangelo” prize in Carrara, a significant recognition of his contribution to sculpture. The following year, in 2003, he participated in the prestigious Venice Biennale, presenting the work “Sognando la Pace.” In 2013, the Mondadori Electa publishing house released the “Catalogo Generale della scultura” of the artist, a comprehensive collection of his works from 1971 to 2013, curated by Professor Carlo Pirovano. In 2014, Atchugarry completed the sculpture “Movimento nel Mondo,” an imposing 8.35-meter-high work made of Carrara marble, now located in Kallo-Beveren, Belgium. Today, the artist divides his time between Lecco, where he continues his creative work, and Manantiales, Uruguay, where he manages the Fundación Pablo Atchugarry, a center dedicated to the development of art, with a particular focus on a park of monumental sculptures and teaching sculpture.
